Assoc. Prof. Maria Ruth B. Pineda-Cortel, PhD of the Department of Medical Technology of the Faculty of Pharmacy is the recipient of the 2022 Outstanding Young Scientist (Health Science) Award from the National Academy of Science and Technology, which will personally confer the distinction during the July 13-14, 2022 Annual Scientific Meeting at the Manila Hotel.
Pineda-Cortel, a researcher at the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences, is a multi-awarded scientist whose recent work has focused on Gestational Diabetes Mellitus. In 2021, she received the 2021 Philippine Association of Schools of Medical Technology (PASMETH) Educators Awards for Excellence. She was likewise chosen as one of the 20 ASEAN Science Diplomats. For this latest plum, she will receive a cash prize and will be eligible for a research grant from the Department of Science and Technology upon approval of a proposal.
The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST)- Philippines, is the highest recognition body on science and technology in the country. The OYS Award is given to young Filipino Scientists with exceptional ability to undertake and publish researches that contribute to the advancement of science and the well-being of Filipinos.
Pineda-Cortel joins the ranks of Thomasian scientists who have been recognized with the honor. Among the recent awardees are Chemistry Professor Allan Patrick G. Macabeo, Dr. rer. nat. (2015).
