Sevilla becomes Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology

Prof. Fortunato B. Sevilla III, Ph.D., former Dean of the College of Science and former Assistant to the Rector for Research, was elected as an Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology, the first active professor from the University of Santo Tomas to be accorded such honor.

Sevilla earned his BS in Chemistry degree in UST in 1968, and later on earned his master’s and doctorate degrees in Instrumentation and Analytical Science from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.
Sevilla served as Director of the Research Center for the Natural Sciences from 1987-2000, and later on as Dean of the College of Science from 2002-2008. A year later, he was named Assistant to the Rector for Research. In 2010, he was appointed by Malacañang to be part of a research team.
The chemistry professor known for teaching the subject in Tagalog is an expert and instrumentation and pioneered chemical sensors and biosensors in the Philippines. To honor his legacy, he was the recipient of UST’s second festschrift, in 2014, when thirty-three articles related to his field of expertise were compiled and presented as a testament to his sterling academic record.

The awarding ceremony took place on July 9, 2015 (Thursday), at the Manila Hotel.
