The UNITAS journal of the University of Santo Tomas celebrates its centennial year in 2022! Established in 1922, UNITAS is the oldest extant multidisciplinary journal in the Philippines, published by a modern university in Asia, which incidentally is the oldest in Asia at 410 years. To commemorate its centenary, a line-up of activities for scholars, researchers, students, and the general public has been prepared.
The opening salvo of the year-long celebration is the Authors International Lecture Series which will be held from February to April, featuring international authors who have been published in UNITAS, who will speak directly to the audience across platforms.
In this event, the authors will transform their work from the printed page to a classroom lecture-style forum, engaging the audience in the world of intellectual and scholarly discovery. Each lecture will be based on the author’s article published in UNITAS, in which the salient points are explicated and elaborated on for the audience consisting of students and scholars worldwide.
In June, the May 2022 regular issue will be launched in a program featuring an internationally renowned scholar.
In July, 100 years to the date of UNITAS of its founding in July 1922, the UNITAS Special Centennial issue will be launched in a program featuring members of the International Board of Editors.
From August 29 to 30, the Asian Journals Network colloquium will be hosted by UNITAS. It has been organized by the Editor-in-Chief of UNITAS and UST Scholar-in-Residence, Prof. Maria Luisa Torres-Reyes, Ph.D. Representatives of Asian Journals from China, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Philippines will constitute the speakers and members of the organizing committee.
In December, the year-long celebration will be capped by the launch of the November 2022 issue, which will contain monographs.
The schedule of the celebration’s opening salvo, the UNITAS Authors International Lecture Series, follows: Ekaterina Baklanova, Moscow State University, February 4, 3:00 pm, will lecture on “From Makiling to Rosales: Philippine Literary Studies in Russia.” The article was part of Vol. 93 No. 2
Jose D. Blanco, University of California, San Diego, Feb 22, 1:00 pm, will lecture on “A Mexican Princess in the Tagalog Sultan’s Court.” The article was published in Vol 92, No.1 David O’Connor, formerly of the United Nations, NY, March 11, 10:00 am, will lecture on “The Sustainable Development Goals and the Importance of Cultural Change.” The article was part of Vol 94, No. 2 Juan Miguel Leandro L. Quizon, Chinese University of Hong Kong, March 31, 3:00 pm, will lecture on “Dictatorship’s Temporal Edifice.” The article can be read in Vol 94, No 2. Jesus Cyril M. Conde, Ateneo de Naga University, April 12, 3:00 pm, will speak on “Metonymies of Ethnobotany and the Fellowship Discourse of Sagrada Familia Healers in Irosin, Sorsogon, Philippine.” The article was published in Vol 94, No. Vincenz Serrano, Ateneo de Manila University, April 29, 3:00 pm, will speak on “Total Midnight All Over the Land Escaping Minute by Minute into the Small Hours”: Historiography and Baroque Poetics in Nick Joaquin’s A Question of Heroes.” The article was included in Vol. 94, No. 1.
The events will be held online or in some hybrid format and will be open to the public. The centennial celebration is billed “Where Scholarship Stands the Test of time.”
