Dr. Reynaldo M. Javate, former Professor III of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Department of Ophthalmology and Active Medical Staff of the University of Santo Tomas Hospital, was recognized as part one of the Asia-Pacific Eye 100: 100 Most Influential Ophthalmologists 2022.
The awardees were announced and formally acknowledged at the Recognition Ceremony on February 23, 2023, during the 38th Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress in conjunction with the 13th Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology Annual Scientific meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology (APJO), a well-established SCI journal in the Asia Pacific region and beyond announced the establishment of the “Asia-Pacific Eye 100: 100 Most Influential Ophthalmologists 2022. The Asia-Pacific Eye 100 aims to honor and celebrate the top 100 most influential and inspiring ophthalmologists from the Asia-Pacific (AP) region who have made significant contributions to ophthalmology in the region and beyond.
There were 176 nominations from 17 countries/territories. The process consisted of two rounds of selection for the Top 100 and Top 10 respectively. All nominations were thoroughly assessed by an independent selection committee, which was composed of 22 senior ophthalmologists from 15 countries/ territories, all of whom have exceptional professional profiles and status. Nominees and awardees must demonstrate significant involvement and contributions to ophthalmology in some of the following areas: 1) Academic achievements and leadership roles; 2) Professional leadership and involvement in international ophthalmology; 3) Research achievements and contributions; 4) H-Index; SCI publications; 5 representative articles; 5) Journal editorial office and congresses organization; 6) Patents and innovations; 7) Training, teaching and education; 8) Humanitarian works; 9) Awards and honors, and/or 10) Achievements and contributions other than the above areas.
Javate is known to be an exemplary leader in the field of Ophthalmology as the Founding President of the Asia- Pacific Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Former President of the International Society of Dacryology and Dry Eye, Former President of the Philippine Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and also, Former Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and UST Hospital Eye Institute. He is also an outstanding educator, researcher and innovator in his field for which he was given numerous awards and recognitions. His accomplishments include publications of articles and books, and delivery of over 352 lectures, instructional courses, cadaveric and live demonstrations worldwide. He is also a scientific reviewer of various internationally peer-reviewed journals. These significant contributions to Ophthalmology landed him a spot in the Top 100.
