Senior BS-Biochem trio reaps award for sustainable scientific research

A trio of BS-Biochemistry Students received the “Ajinomoto Philippines Award” and the “Leave a Nest Award” in the TechPlan Demo Day 2025 held on May 17, 2025.

The trio of Ms. Yzabel Anjela So, Ms. Kate Cristal Ventura, and Mr. Rein Louis Caringal was recognized for their innovative research entitled “GreenPump: Generating Renewable Energy through Pseudomonas aeruginosa Utilization of Microplastics,” which studied the potential of science-based solutions to address environmental and energy challenges.

The Department of Biochemistry faculty members who mentored them were Prof. Maria Salvacion A. Esmalla, Asst. Prof. Paolo Robert P. Bueno, Asst. Prof. Kristan Bryan C. Simbulan, and Prof. Myla R. Santiago-Bautista, PhD.

The recognition likewise attested to the Faculty’s dedication to practicing sustainability and interdisciplinary collaboration in scientific research.

The TechPlan Demo Day was a national event spearheaded by Leave a Nest Philippines to highlight science and technology-based solutions with real-world impact.

The Ajinomoto Award and the Leave a Nest Award spotlight projects with outstanding contributions to sustainability.
