Biological Sciences dept. recognized for outstanding contributions to Philippine microbiology, UST joins Philippine Microbiology Consortium

During the 47th Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting of the Philippine Society for Microbiology last July 19-20, 2018, the Department of Biological Sciences of the College of Science was conferred the Outstanding Service Award (Institutional Category) for its contributions to the Philippine Society for Microbiology, in line with its efforts for the promotion of the field in the country. Biological Sciences Department Chair Rey Donne S. Papa, PhD and Microbiology Coordinator Gina R. Dedeles, PhD received the award, along with Microbiology faculty members and alumni.

UST remains to be the only higher education institution in the country offering a bachelor’s degree in microbiology. The BSc Microbiology program enjoys Level IV accredited status, the highest recognition, from the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation.

During the same event, UST was included in the roster of member-institutions of the Philippine Microbiology Consortium. The inclusion of UST comes after the Rector, Very Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P., PhD, signed the Memorandum of Agreement. The move for UST’s inclusion was spearheaded by the Philippine Society for Microbiology and the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) through Academician Professor Asuncion K. Raymundo, PhD. The consortium, which gathers HEIs offering microbiology programs (as straight degree programs or specializations), aims to promote collaborations that will result in graduates who have adequate knowledge to qualify as Registered Microbiologists.
