UST College of Education academic staff Mr. Mark Anthony Angeles won second place at the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino’s Makata ng Taon 2022. The awarding was held at Hotel Rembrandt, Tomas Morato Avenue, Quezon City on April 27, 2022.
Angeles’s winning epic poem “Buntot Kang Gumuguhit sa Lawas na Dalubtalain” narrates the Filipino people’s process of naming—from our concept of nyáwa to our nom de guerre. One stanza interrogates:
Kailan niya unang sasambitin
Ang báyan/bánwa/íli?
Kailan niya maaalala
Ang una niyang pagsikad
Sa pagkakatali sa matris?
Dala niya ang bigat ng inunan
Paglabas sa sangmaliwanag.
Nababalot siya ng dugô.
Angeles was conferred with the title Makata ng Taon in 2016. He also bagged 2nd place in 2014. He is the founder and Director of the first Caloocan Writers Workshop, which he organized with the Caloocan Historical and Cultural Studies Association.
Aside from teaching Filipino subjects and Multimedia Storytelling, he is also a Resident Fellow of UST Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies.
