Golden Shower Tree

Scientific Name: Cassia fistula L.

Family Name: Fabaceae

Facts:

The Golden Shower Tree (Cassia fistula), celebrated for its vibrant yellow blossoms, holds a special place in various cultures. In the Philippines, it is commonly cultivated as an ornamental plant in gardens, parks, and along highways, adding a splash of color to the landscape. Interestingly, this tree was introduced to the country after World War II and has since become naturalized. However, due to its fast-growing nature, it can overtake native forestry ecosystems and is considered invasive in many countries.

Beyond its ornamental appeal, the Golden Shower Tree has practical uses. The strong and durable wood is utilized for making small implements like tool handles and boxes. Additionally, the leaves are used as mulch, and the wood serves as a source of fuel and charcoal. In traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda, various parts of the tree are used to treat ailments such as fevers and headaches.
