UST Filipino Dept., NCR institutions discuss state of translation in KWF’s online forum

UST Departamento ng Filipino, UST Sentro sa Salin at Araling Salin (UST SSAS), and Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) conducted an online forum on the state of translation in leading universities in Metro Manila on August 28, 2023.

Dubbed as “Mga Danas ng Piling Unibersidad sa NCR sa Pagsusulong ng Propesyonalisasyon ng Pagsasaling Filipino,” the assembly was organized in cooperation with University of the Philippines Diliman Sentro ng Wikang Filipino (UPD SWF), Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Sentro ng Pagsasalin, De La Salle University Sentro sa Pagsasalin, Intelektuwalisasyon, at Adbokasiya (DLSU SALITA), Philippine Normal University (PNU) Sentro ng Pag-aaral ng Wika, and University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) Kagawaran ng Filipino.

Asst. Prof. Jayson D. Petras, Ph.D., the current UPD SWF Director, discussed “UPD Sentro ng Wikang Filipino: Gampanin at Punyagi sa Pagsusulong ng Propesyonalisasyon ng Pagsasaling Filipino”.

Meanwhile, PUP Sentro ng Pagsasalin chief Professor Jenalyn Lai addressed the “Danas ng PUP sa Pagsusulong ng Propesyonalisasyon ng Pagsasaling Filipino,” followed by UST SSAS chair Assoc. Prof. Wennielyn Fajilan, Ph.D., who lectured on “Ilang Tala sa Pagsusulong ng Propesyonalisasyon ng Pagsasalin ng Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas.”

Aside from introducing their institution and expounding on their current programs, DSLU SALITA Director Dr. Raquel Sison Buban discussed their challenges on being a translation service provider, language advocacy center, and P/Filipinization of Lasallian Core Curriculum Courses.

Language and translation stalwarts served as reactors, including PNU Sentro ng Pag-aaral ng Wika head Professor Ryan Dennis Callueng, UA&P Kagawaran ng Filipino chair Dr. Moreal Camba, and KWF Sangay ng Salin head Mr. John Enrico Torralba.

KWF Chairman Dr. Arthur P. Casanova and Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Cheryl R. Peralta, DrPH graced the event, which was also organized in celebration of Buwan ng Wika 2023.
