UST Filipino Dept. joins KWF Forum on Gramatikang Filipino

UST Departamento ng Filipino academic staff Assoc. Prof. Amalia Castro, Ph.D. and Mr. Mark Anthony Angeles attended the Forum sa Gramatikang Filipino organized by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) on September 8, 2023.

The consultative forum aimed to gather comments from various language-oriented organizations on the publication of Gramatikang Filipino, which will be based on modern language learning theory and contemporary use of the Filipino language. The said publication will serve as an update to Balarila ng Wikang Pambansa, released in 1939 by Surian ng Wikang Pambansa (SWP), the precursor of KWF, and was edited by then SWP member Lope K. Santos.

Professors from the University of the Philippines – Diliman Department of Linguistics and Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas, including Dr. Jesus Federico Hernandez, Dr. Ronel Laranjo, Dr. Ma. Althea Enriquez, Dr. Jem Javier, and Dr. Mary Ann Bacolod initiated the writing and research of the draft of the said grammar book with language scholars from KWF.

Reactors who evaluated the initial draft included Aurora Batnag, Ph.D. from Pambansang Samahan sa Linggwistika at Literaturang Filipino (PSLLF) and Tanggol Wika, Danilyn Abingosa, Ph.D. from Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, Shirley Dita, Ph.D. from the Linguistic Society of the Philippines (LSP), Leticia Pagkalinawan, Ph.D. from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, and Raquel Sison-Buban, Ph.D. from De La Salle University-Manila (DLSU).

Language instructors from DLSU, Philippine Normal University, and Polytechnic University of the Philippines, as well as representatives from the Department of Education-Bureau of Learning Resources and language organizations, also participated in the event.

The grammar book is set to be published and available for public access next year.
