Dr. Mudjekeewis Santos of the Biological Sciences programs of the Graduate School was recently elected as an Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology. Santos teaches Population Genetics and Aquatic Biotechnology in the MSc and PhD programs of the Graduate School.
Santos was recognized for his “significant work in fish science, fishery management, and marine biodiversity in the Philippines.” He introduced the use of the “DNA barcoding protocol in the Philippines to understand fish population structures, identify fish species and by-products for traceability and labeling purposes, and for monitoring of trade in endangered, protected, and regulated aquatic species.” Santos is credited for initiating the leading laboratory in utilizing genetics in fisheries management and regulation: the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute – Genetic Fingerprinting Laboratory.
Santos, who is affiliated with the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, actively collaborates with Thomasian researchers and mentors students in the graduate programs. He joins the likes of Professor Emeritus Fortunato B. Sevilla III, PhD as an Academician.
