VELASCO, Alvin Brian C.

Asst. Prof. Alvin Brian Co Velasco, MD, FPCP, FPSG, FPSDE, holds the position of Assistant Professor 1 in the Department of Medicine at the UST Faculty of Medicine & Surgery. Serving as the Chief of the Section of Gastroenterology within the same department, he plays a vital role in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Santo Tomas. Dr. Velasco is actively involved in the medical community, contributing as a Member of the Accreditation Committee for both the Philippine Society of Gastroenterology and the Philippine Society of Digestive Endoscopy. His scholarly and research interests revolve around Adult Gastroenterology and Advanced Endoscopy.

Dr. Velasco’s extensive education and training include Fellowships in Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy at Kyushu University Hospital in Fukuoka, Japan, and Daegu Catholic University Medical Center in Daegu, South Korea. He completed his local Fellowships in Advance Therapeutic Endoscopy and Gastroenterology at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital. A Cum Laude graduate of Doctor of Medicine at the University of Santo Tomas, he is affiliated with various medical societies, including being a Fellow of the Philippine Society of Gastroenterology, the Philippine Society of Digestive Endoscopy, and the Philippine College of Physicians. Dr. Velasco serves as a member of the Hepatology Society of the Philippines and the Pampanga Medical Society. His hospital affiliations include the University of Santo Tomas Hospital, FEU-NRMF Medical Center, Mother Teresa of Calcutta Medical Center, Our Lady of Mt Carmel Medical Center, VL Makabali Memorial Hospital, and Green City Medical Center.

  • Dr. Alvin Brian Velasco’s extensive research portfolio showcases his expertise in hepatology and gastroenterology. His 2009 meta-analysis on sodium bicarbonate’s role in preventing contrast-induced nephropathy was presented at the 30th Philippine College of Physicians Annual Convention. Notably, he reported a rare case of Melioidosis as severe community-acquired pneumonia at the American Thoracic Society International Conference in 2010. 
  • Dr. Velasco’s research on HBsAg-negative patients, diabetes, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma has been recognized, earning him awards like the Young Investigator’s Award. His randomized trial on bowel preparation for colonoscopy received acclaim, further solidifying his contributions to digestive health research on both national and international platforms.
