Research Highlights

  • Dr. Sandra Navarra has made significant contributions to the field of rheumatology, particularly in the study of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Her research focuses on developing effective treatment strategies, defining remission criteria, and assessing the impact of SLE on patients’ lives. One of her notable research papers is “Treat-to-target in systemic lupus erythematosus: recommendations from an international task force,” published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases in 2014. This paper, co-authored with RF Van Vollenhoven and others, provides recommendations for a treat-to-target approach in managing SLE, emphasizing the importance of achieving specific therapeutic goals. In 2017, Dr. Navarra contributed to “A framework for remission in SLE: consensus findings from a large international task force on definitions of remission in SLE (DORIS).” This collaborative effort, led by R Van Vollenhoven, establishes a framework for defining remission in SLE, offering consensus-based criteria to guide clinicians in assessing and achieving remission.
  • Another significant paper is the “2021 DORIS definition of remission in SLE: final recommendations from an international task force,” wherein Dr. Navarra and colleagues refined and updated the criteria for remission in SLE. This reflects ongoing efforts to improve the precision of defining remission in clinical practice and research. Another major collaborative research by Asia Pacific Lupus Collaboration (APLC) which Dr. Navarra co-authors explored the association between achieving the lupus low disease activity state (LLDAS) and health-related quality of life in the paper titled “Association of the lupus low disease activity state (LLDAS) with health-related quality of life in a multinational prospective study”, highlighting the importance of LLDAS as a treatment target in enhancing the well-being of SLE patients. Moreover, her research extends to understanding the presentation of newly diagnosed SLE patients, predicting damage accrual in patients with no clinical or serological disease activity, and exploring the impact of SLE on various aspects of patients’ lives, including health, family, and work.
  • Dr. Navarra also co-authored updated SLE treatment guidelines by European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) [Fanouriakis A, Kostopoulou M, Andersen J, et alEULAR recommendations for the management of systemic lupus erythematosus: 2023 update. Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases 2024;83:15-2] by and by Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology (APLAR) [ Mok, C. C.,et al. (2021). The Asia-Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology consensus statements on the management of systemic lupus erythematosus. The Lancet Rheumatology, 3(7), e517-e531. https://doi.org/10.1016/S2665-9913(21)00009-6].
  • Overall, Dr. Sandra Navarra’s international research collaboration has significantly contributed to the understanding and management of SLE, providing valuable insights that guide clinicians in optimizing treatment strategies and improving patients’ quality of life.
