Mr. Paterno R. Esmaquel II is the news editor of Rappler. A journalist for 15 years and counting, he specializes in covering religion and foreign affairs. Mr. Esmaquel began as a production assistant at Cheche Lazaro’s Probe Productions Inc., serving as a researcher, field producer, transcriber, writer, and video editor, all in one. When Probe ended its 24-year run, he moved to GMA News Online as a news producer, then joined Rappler in 2012 as one of its first multimedia reporters. In 2015, Mr. Esmaquel obtained his master of arts degree in journalism from the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Manila University, where he also finished high school and college. Five years later, he graduated with a master of science degree in Asian Studies, focusing on the comparative study of religions in plural societies, at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
