Dr. Elaine Cheeay Cunanan is a Consultant Internist and Endocrinologist at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital in Manila, Philippines, where she also serves as an Associate Professor at the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. She has been actively involved in postgraduate medical education, having served as Training Officer of the Fellowship Training Program in Endocrinology from 2020 to 2024.
Dr. Cunanan is a Manuscript Editor for the Journal of the ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies (2014–present) and currently serves as Vice President of the Philippine College of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (PCEDM), where she previously held roles as Secretary (2024), Treasurer (2023), and Member of the Board of Trustees (2018–present).
Her research and clinical interests include thyroid disorders, diabetes, and obesity. She is an active contributor to the development of national clinical practice guidelines, serving as Co-Chair of the Steering Committee for the Philippine Clinical Practice Guidelines on Hyperthyroidism, and as an Evidence Reviewer for the guidelines on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Obesity.
Dr. Cunanan obtained her Doctor of Medicine and Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, both magna cum laude, from the University of Santo Tomas, and completed her Fellowship in Endocrinology at the same institution. She further pursued a Clinical and Research Fellowship in Endocrinology at the National University Hospital in Singapore, and a Master’s Degree in Health Professions Education (magna cum laude) from the University of Santo Tomas Graduate School.
She is a Diplomate of the Philippine Specialty Boards of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and Metabolism, and a topnotcher of the Philippine Physicians’ Licensure Examination. Dr. Cunanan continues to integrate clinical excellence, academic leadership, and evidence-based medicine in her practice and teaching.
