ADVINCULA, Jose Cardinal F.

Appointed by the Holy See on March 25, 2021, Jose Fuerte Cardinal Advincula is the Metropolitan Archbishop of Manila. He was ordained as a priest of the Archdiocese of Capiz in 1976 and was later appointed spiritual director of Saint Pius X Seminary, also acting as professor and dean of studies. He then began further studies, first in psychology at De La Salle University and then in Sacred Theology at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila and Canon Law at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome, Italy.

Upon returning home, he served in the seminary of Vigan (Archdiocese of Neuva Segovia) and then in the regional Seminary of Jaro, Iloilo. In 1995, he was appointed Rector of Saint Pius X Seminary in Capiz, becoming also the Defender of the Bond, Promoter of Justice, and then Judicial Vicar in Capiz. In 1999, he became pastor of Santo Tomas de Villanueva Parish in Dao.

He was appointed Bishop of San Carlos in July 2001 and received episcopal consecration a few months later. In 2011, he was transferred to the metropolitan See of Capiz. Within the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, he has served as a member of the Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Commission for Indigenous Peoples.

In his 4 decades of presbyteral and episcopal ministry, Cardinal Advincula has been known for his pastoral programs reaching out to communities and establishing mission stations and mission schools in far-flung areas in the dioceses of San Carlos and Capiz.

He was created and proclaimed Cardinal by Pope Francis in the consistory of November 28, 2020. He is a member of the Congregation for the Clergy.
