Papa of Science is elected president of Philippine Society for Microbiology

College of Science faculty member Asst. Prof. Donna May DC. Papa, Ph.D., from the Department of Biological Sciences, was elected as President of the Philippines Society for Microbiology, Inc. (PSM) during the organization’s 50th Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting, held from July 21 to 24, 2021.


Papa, who will be the President of the PSM for the fiscal year 2021-2022, is a resident researcher at the Pure and Applied Microbiology Laboratory of the UST Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences (RCNAS). She heads the Bacteriophage Ecology, Aquaculture, Therapy and Systematics research group of RCNAS, which is the first bacteriophage research group in the country.


A true-blue Thomasian, Papa obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, her Master’s degree in Microbiology (Magna cum laude), and her Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences degree from UST. Asst. Prof. Papa is also a Diplomate accredited by the Philippine Academy of Microbiology.
Papa has served PSM in various capacities. She was the Vice President from 2020 to 2021, the Corresponding Secretary from 2015 to 2019, and Division Representative in 2008, and 2012 to 2014.
