Nutrition and dietetics students win awards in DOST-FNRI research contest

On July 8, 2022, students of the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics program of the UST College of Education won awards in the Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) Undergraduate Student Research Competition. The students orally presented their work in the event, entitled “Inobasyon at Solusyon sa Bagong Hamon ng Nutrisyon” (Innovation and Solution in the New Challenge of Nutrition).

The two studies were selected for presentation following an initial screening by the board of judges. The titles and the authors are:

  1. “The Experiences of Registered Nutritionist-Dietitians (RND) in the Hospital, Food Industry and Public Health Setting During the Covid-19 Pandemic Crisis in the Philippines: A Qualitative Study” by Trishia D. Afundar (Presenter), Angelica T. Alandy-dy, Bryan D. Borja, Gaena P. Cruz, Shereene N. Ko, Daniel G. Salunga, RND, MSPH, Florimae E. Paimalan, RND, MHPEd

2. “Development of Nutrition Storybook Series with Learning Activities on the Selected Messages from Ten Kumainments in Promoting Healthy Diet and Active Lifestyle for School-Aged Filipino Children” by Pamela Diane B. Yanga (Presenter), Aria Gaia M. Ambray, Jhon Paolo Steven B. Cajucom Anna Margarita A. Martinez, Aubrie S. Verceles, Daniel G. Salunga, RND, MSPH, Florimae E. Paimalan, RND, MHPEd, Diane S. Mendoza, RND, MSc.

The work of Afundar and company won the first place, earning them a plaque of recognition and a cash prize of Php 15,000. Meanwhile, the work of Yanga’s group won second place, earning a plaque of recognition and a cash prize of Php 12,000.

The student awardees were accompanied by the Chair of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Asst. Prof. Kathleen N. Cruzada, RND, MPHI, MA.
