Nursing hosts collaborative intl online learning session with University of Washington

The very first Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) in University of Santo Tomas (UST) was conducted last March 25, 2018 to May 10, 2018 between University of Washington (Bothell) USA and UST College of Nursing. The online collaborative course between the two universities was spearheaded by Prof. Butch de Castro, PhD, RN of the University of Washington, Bothell, USA and its counterpart COIL Professors Asst. Prof. Elizabeth D. Cortez, MAN, RN, the Chair of the International Relations & Programs in UST Nursing and Asst. Prof. Genecar G. Pe Benito, MAN, CRRN, RN as Co-Chair from UST College of Nursing, Manila, Philippines.

The online course was composed of nursing students from University of Washington-Bothell USA and Philippine’s UST College of Nursing Level students. The goals of the said online course are the following: 1) provide opportunity to reflect on Nursing practice and professionalism in own country compared to another,2) encourage collaborative problem-solving and task completion by exploring shared interest in Nursing, and 3) foster respect and appreciation of multi-cultural perspectives in anticipation of working in a diverse professional work environments.

The C.O.I.L. course is with learning objectives: 1) Utilize web-based applications to collaborate with others for scholarly learning, 2) Describe strategies that optimize communication skills to build rapport with international colleagues, 3) Analyze one’s own understanding of professional nursing practice in contrast to an international perspective, 4) Develop methods that respect diversity when working in teams to respond to patient/client needs, and 5) Evaluate the value of considering multi-cultural approaches to address health problems in globalizing societies. This course is a pioneer catalyst for internationalizing the nursing program in UST.

Now on its second year, the COIL course will once again be offered to selected senior nursing students as part of their intensive nursing practicum course and will run from
