New Thomasian study informs AI integration in the workplace through John Paul II’s Laborem exercens

A new research by Institute of Religion academic staff Inst. Patricia Joy Mobilla, MA explored how Saint Pope John Paul II’s encyclical Laborem exercens can help guide artificial intelligence integration frameworks in the workplace, especially in the Philippine context, where 36% of jobs are predicted to be at risk of being taken over by artificial intelligence machines, threatening job opportunities.

The study entitled “Artificial intelligence and displacement of human work: Towards an ethical A.I. inclusion in work through Laborem exercens” was published in AY & Society, under Springer Nature Link. Quoting the encyclical, Mobilla emphasized “priority of labor over capital in the face of technological advancements that are in conflict of the authentic meaning of work.” Mobilla re-emphasized how work is defined as “any activity by humans, both manual and intellectual, by which one earns his daily necessities and contributes to the unceasing elevation of the cultural and moral level of the society.”
