National Youth Mental Health Summit 2021

The University of Santo Tomas will hold the National Youth Mental Health Summit on April 28-29, 2022 to provide a virtual venue for conversations on the experiences of university students with mental health through research presentations, wellness sessions, and stakeholder consultations.

Day 1

On the first day, acting Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Rev. fr. Jannel N. Abogado, O.P., DTPS will deliver the opening remarks.

The first session will tackle the topic on “Mental Health and the Filipino Youth: Results from Six Universities”. The speakers for this session will be the group of Assoc. Prof. Maria Carinnes P. Alejandria, PhD of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education; Asst. Prof. Peejay D. Bengwasan, PhD of the Saint Louis University; Asst. Prof. Alvie P. Bergado-Timbancaya, MA, RGC of the Palawan State University; Dir. Ma. Francia Sazon–Dechavez, MAEd, RGC of the University of Santo Tomas–Legazpi; and Asst. Prof. Jean S. Taypa, MA of the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology.

The following session will examine “The Role of Universities in Supporting Mental Health Needs of Filipino Youth: Results from Six Universities”. The speakers for this session will be the group of Simbahayan Community Development Office Director Asst. Prof. Froilan A. Alipao, MCD; Communications Bureau Director Mr. Philippe Jose S. Hernandez, MEng; and Senior High School Humanities and Social Sciences Strand Chair Ms. Marie Antonette D. Quan-Nalus, MA.

Mr. Jun Angelo M. Sunglao of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine will lead the panel of discussions.

Assoc. Prof. Alejandria is the Research Interest Group Lead for Social Health Studies at the RCCSEd and a faculty member at the Department of Sociology. Joining her in the team as co-leads of this project on mental health that earned the Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Health Research Development (DOST-PCHRD) grant are Asst. Prof. Alipao, Mr. Hernandez, and Ms. Quan.

Day 2

On the second day, the topic that will be covered is the “Stakeholders and Current Developments Mental Health”. Assoc. Prof. John Guilaran, PhD of the University of the Philippines – Visayas will lecture on the “Lessons on Mental Health and Disaster”; Ms. Frances Prescilla L. Cuevas of the Department of Health will lecture on the “Philippine Government Programs on Mental Health”; and Dr. Clementine Bautista of the Health Finance Policy Sector – Philippine Health Insurance Corporations will lecture on the “Mental Health Care Coverage”.

After the series of lectures and presentations, a workshop on the IEC Development will be conducted among students, community, university personnel, and researchers.

Prof. Maria Minerva P. Calimag, MD, PhD of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery will lead the synthesis and the workshop wrap-up.

Lastly, Mr. Jaime C. Montoya, MD, MSc, PhD, CESO II of DOST-PCHRD and Prof. Alejandro C. Baroque II, MD, DASHS Program Leader, will cap the event with their closing remarks.
