Justice Carpio delivers keynote at 2nd Asian regional conference on forensic linguistics

The UST Graduate School hosted the 2nd Asian Regional Conference of the International Association of Forensic Linguists (IAFL) from July 7 to 9, 2016 at the Paredes Building. With the theme “Forensic Linguistics/Language and Law: Contexts, Issues, and Trends”, the three-day conference was the first and a first for the Philippines and the second in Asia. It convened linguists, psychologists, language teachers and practitioners, and lawyers from different parts of the country and of the world. It was co-hosted by the UST Department of English.

Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio T. Carpio delivered the keynote address. The plenary session speakers were: Dr. Krzysztof Kredens of Aston University, UK, Dr. Ng Nga Shan Eva of The University of Hong Kong, SAR, Dr. Isabel Picornell of QED Limited, Guernsey, UK, Dr. Georgina Heydon of the Centre for Global Research, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia, Prof. Yuan Chuanyou of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, China and Prof. Janet Ainsworth of Seattle University School of Law, Washington, USA. Apart from the plenary papers delivered, two panel sessions and six parallel sessions were held. International speakers and paper presenters came from the US, UK, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Estonia, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, apart from the host country, the Philippines. The conference also attracted local presenters and delegates from various regions in the country namely: Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Bicol, Quezon, Iloilo, Davao, Cotabato, Bukidnon, Butuan, and the National Capital Region.

The conference aimed at helping in disseminating a new field in applied linguistics, such as forensic linguistics in the country and in Asia and bring together specialists in the areas of law, linguistics, psychology and even the members of police organizations. The scientific committee is composed of Prof. Isabel Picornell, Richard Powell of Nihon University, Japan and Prof. Marilu R. Madrunio of the University of Santo Tomas. The organizing committee members were Maria Rosario Aranda, Maria Regina P. Arriero, UST Graduate School Faculty Secretary Alejandro S. Bernardo, Ph.D., Jean R. Celino, Judith Ma. Angelica S. Claustro, Shielanie S. Dacumos, Raquel R. Jimenez, Rachelle B. Lintao, Rodrigo A. Litao,Ph.D., UST Graduate School Dean Marilu R. Madrunio, Zenaida F. Reyes and Veronico N. Tarrayo from the UST Department of English and the UST Graduate School.

The heavy downpour hardly dissuaded more than 100 participants from attending the conference from the first up to the last day. UST Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Clarita D. Carillo, Ph.D., and UST Graduate School Regent Fr. José Antonio E. Aureada, O.P., welcomed the participants on the first day of the conference.
