Jose of Archives, Grad School delivers lecture on Fil-Hispanic architecture in Granada

Prof. Regalado Trota Jose, MCH, Archivist of the Archivo dela Universidad de Santo Tomas and professor of the Graduate School, delivered a lecture on the Arquitectura Fil-hispana at the Universidad de Granada (University of Granada) on October 2, 2019.

The presentation consisted of two parts. In the first part, the materials used in the constructions during the Spanish colonial period were featured, including hardwood, adobe (volcanic tuff, different from the mud-and-straw bricks used in Latin America), coralstone, andesite (volcanic stone), and lime. A thin wall consisting of woven bamboo strips plastered with lime locally called tabique pampango was also presented.

In the second part, the types of edifices built during the period were featured, according to several categories: civil (plazas, administrative buildings, jails, bridges, dams); domestic (houses); defensive (forts, watchtowers, blockhouses); commercial (parian, markets, alcaiceriaaduana); industrial (factories, piers, light houses); and social (theaters, hospitals), among others.
