Mr. Jonathan V. Geronimo, PhD, a faculty member of the UST Senior High School – Filipino learning area, is one of the recipients of the Gawad Julian Cruz Balmaseda 2022. The announcement was posted on the Facebook page of the Komisyon of Wikang Filipino on January 18, 2022.
Geronimo was awarded for his dissertation entitled “Pagpiglas sa Bartolina: Naratibo, Espasyo, at Bayan sa Panitik ng mga Bilanggong Politikal na Manunulat”, which explored the political phenomenon of prison literature and discourses that occur in a structural society that breeds political prisoners, who were authors themselves, in the history of the nation.
Likewise, Geronimo’s work attempted to deepen the interdisciplinary nature of knowledge, as well as scrutinizing local and global issues, through thorough research.
The Gawad Julian Cruz Balmaseda recognizes the best thesis and dissertation written in Filipino for the academe setting, most especially in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, and mathematics. Through chances of publication and incentives, the award also aims to encourage the researchers to write their original works and to enrich the intellectualization and the modernization of Filipino language.
Geronimo, along with Mr. Roque Augustus L. Lamadrid, who also received the same award for his thesis, will be formally feted on January 26, 2022 at Bulwagang Romualdez – Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino.
