Galán of Literature, CCWLS talks on problems, prospects of translators at University of San Carlos seminar

UST Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies Assistant Director Assoc. Prof. Ralph Semino Galán, delivered a lecture on literary translation held on October 15, 2016 at the University of San Carlos in Cebu City. The two-day seminar, entitled “Translation: Beyond Basics,” was organized by the Cebuano Studies Center Director Dr. Hope Sabanpan-Yu, in cooperation with Inotherwords, Inc., a Cebu-based organization of translators, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

Galán’s lecture titled “Appropriations and Approximations: Authorship, Exactitude, and Verse Translation in Theory and Practice” delved into the many problems and prospects encountered by a practicing poet-translator.

In his forthcoming book, Sa mga Pagitan ng Buhay at Iba pang Salin , to be published by the UST Publishing House, Galán provides his readers with translations of poems from English and Spanish by foreign poets to Filipino, poems from English by contemporary Filipino poets to Filipino, and poems in Filipino by contemporary Filipino poets to English.

Also invited to lecture were Dr. John Iremil Teodoro of De La Salle University, and Fr. Albert E. Alejo, S.J., of the Ateneo de Manila University, whose book of translations entitled Nabighani: Mga Saling Tula ng Kapwa Nilikha was published by the UST Publishing House in 2015.
