Four BS Electronics Engineering students from the Faculty of Engineering, namely, Oliver Jan O. Avelino, John Carl Joel S. Marquez, Matt Ervin G. Mital and Raymond D. Serafica participated in the Research Internship Programs held in Thailand during the Third Term of Academic Year 2015-2016.
One research internship program held at Thammasat University was attended by Avelino and Mital for the whole month of July. Avelino’s undergraduate thesis is Alcohol Intoxication Detection using Low-Resolution Camera, for which Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charturong Tantibundhit served as his adviser. Tantibundhit specializes in digital voice and image signals processing. Meanwhile, Mital was supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wanchai Pijitrojana, who specializes in optics and quantum research. Mital’s undergraduate thesis is Underwater Optical Data Transmission: Characterization of Parameters under Varying Conditions of Turbidity and Water Movement.
Moreover, another research internship program was held at Chulalongkorn University from July 11 to 30. Marquez, whose undergraduate thesis is Correlation of Emotions to TV Show or Film Classification using EEG Signal Analysis, was supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mana Sriyudthsak, who specializes in digital signal processing in biomedical applications. Together with Marquez at Chulalongkorn University was Serafica, whose undergraduate thesis is titled Sitting Posture Assessment using Computer Vision, was mentored by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charchai Pluempitiwiriyawej who specializes in medical image processing.
The research internship programs provided lectures and laboratory experiments to strengthen the students’ basic knowledge of their respective thesis topics under the supervision of the specifically designated professors. It explained to the students how to start with the method part of their theses. The program also led them to formulate short-term to long-term plans, such as planning a longer duration for the future research internship programs, proposing collaborative research studies between students and/or professors to pave the way for more international opportunities and to continue their learning through post-graduate studies.
