The University of Santo Tomas pioneers the offering of the doctorate degree program in medical technology in the Philippines, with the opening of the Doctor of Philosophy major in Medical Technology degree in the Graduate School at the start of the second term of Academic Year 2016-2017.
According to Prof. Aleth Therese L. Dacanay, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Program Lead for Pharmacy and Medical Technology at the Graduate School, “the success of the MS Medical Technology / Clinical Laboratory Science program become its own advertiser, and the demands for a doctorate degree program escalated” both from Thomasians and non-Thomasians.
Banking of the 55 years of excellence demonstrated by the Department of Medical Technology, which is a Center of Excellence as recognized by the Commission on Higher Education, future PhD major in Medical Technology students can expect a transformative learning experience that will equip them with the skills to survive and excel in the global professional arena.
The new program is being offered “to address the demands of an ever-changing and ever-evolving profession.” Dacanay underscores that the “development of advanced laboratory processes generally require a PhD, where interdisciplinary approaches incorporate health information and biotechnology in addition to laboratory science research.” With the PhD now in place, the degree “becomes the zenith of academic education and the ultimate phase of a successful path toward being an independent researcher.”
In the past, MS Medical Technology graduates pursued doctorate studies in Biological Sciences, Public Health, and Education, due to the absence of a PhD program in the country.
