The University of Santo Tomas – Faculty of Engineering inked a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) last March 10, 2016 at the UST Rector’s Hall.In his message, the Ambassador of Taiwan to the Philippines, His Excellency Dr. Gary Song-Huann Lin, lauded the University of Santo Tomas as a famous and close university within his diplomatic circle. “UST is not only the university [in Asia], but also produced many, many outstanding professionals and high-ranking officials.” Ambassador Lin likewise stressed the similarities between Taiwan and the Philippines in terms of culture and history, emphasizing that these similarities, coupled with geographic proximity, can indeed produce mutually beneficial economic progress for both countries.The Vice-President of NTUST, Prof. Jiang, Chen-Chun, PhD, told the delegation—composed of officials and students from NTUST and officials from UST—disclosed that the MoU seeks partnerships primarily in research and student and faculty exchange. He highlighted two Filipino students, Mr. Rex Aurelius C. Robielos, PhD, and Ms. Hana Astrid Canseco, currently studying their doctorate degrees in NTUST and said that he hopes to increase the number of Filipino international students through this new partnership.Signing on behalf of the University of Santo Tomas was Vice-Rector Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P. and, on behalf of NTUST, Prof. Jiang, Chen-Chun, PhD, witnessed by Ambassador Lin. UST International Relations and Programs director Lilian J. Sison, PhD, and Engineering Regent Fr. Roberto L. Luanzon, O.P., were likewise witnesses to the signing.UST Faculty of Engineering dean Philipina A. Marcelo, PhD paid homage to NTUST, a partner with whom UST was able to forge a formal linkage in a matter of two months.
