Dean Peralta, faculty from Rehab Sciences speak at TheraCon 2016

Dean Cheryl R. Peralta, DrPH of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences and two faculty members were resource speakers in TheraCon 2016 held on November 27, 2016 at the Bayanihan Center, Pasig City. With its theme “Strengthening Interprofessional Collaboration Toward Holistic Care,” the event was attended by members of the academe, as well as practitioners of the rehabilitation profession. It was organized by the College of Allied Medical Professions Alumni Association of the University of the Philippines-Manila headed by its president, Mr. Abelardo Apollo I. David Jr., who also teaches at the UST Graduate School under the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program.

In the morning parallel session, Dean Peralta talked on “Utilizing Best Information in Decision Making” under the cluster “Utilizing and Building Knowledge in Clinical Practice.” In the afternoon, Internship Supervisor for Occupational Therapy Asst. Prof. Karen S. Ongtangco, MSPT, gave a talk titled “Practical Opportunities to Integrate Occupational Therapy in the School Setting” under the cluster “Interprofessional Holistic Care: Mainstreaming a Child with Autism with Limited Verbalizations,” while Ms. Arlene C. Chiong-Maya, gave a talk on “Spotlighting Upper Extremity Physical Therapy Management to Foster Participation in Activities of Daily Living” under the cluster “Interprofessional Holistic Care: Homecare for an Adult with Depression and Stroke.” Speech-Language Pathology Department Chair Asst. Prof. Ma. Georgina D. Mojica, MHPEd moderated the cluster on “Interprofessional Holistic Care: Fitness and Transition – Training a Teen with Obesity and Intellectual Disability.”

Faculty members and alumni of the College also attended the event. The talks, followed by an open forum, provided new insights on contemporary and evolving rehabilitation trends that the practitioners can utilize in improving the delivery of health and rehabilitation services in the country. TheraCon is the first national conference for the rehabilitation sciences of the Philippines, presented by CAMPAA in partnership with UNILAB Foundation.
