De Viana, Dery of History present papers at Kuala Lumpur Conference; De Viana visits University of Malaya

Assoc. Prof. Augusto V. de Viana, PhD, Chairperson, and Dr. Luis C. Dery, lecturer of the Department of History of the Faculty of Arts and Letters, presented their papers during the 3rd Conference of the International Council for the Historical and Cultural Cooperation in Southeast Asia (ICHCC-SEA) on August 9, 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The ICHCC-SEA is an international consortium consisting of the Malaysian Historical Society, the Society of Indonesian Historians and the Philippine Historical Association which was established in UST during the 60th anniversary conference of the Philippine Historical Association last August 27, 2015. This year’s conference is the annual event of the ICHCC-SEA.

In the conference, De Viana presented his paper titled “Indigenous Philippine Writing and their Similarity with their Counterparts in Island Southeast Asia.” Meanwhile, Dery discussed Malay royal genealogies encompassing the countries of Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines from the pre-colonial period to the start of the Spanish period. He also discussed the role of women in precolonial Philippine society.

On August 11, 2016, De Viana met with University of Malaya Department of History Chair S. Sivachandralingam Raja, Ph.D., to discuss increased cooperation in research, publication and student and faculty exchange.
