De Castro of History serves as sole editor of nat’l artist’s book on Old Manila

Assoc. Prof. Maria Eloisa G. Parco-de Castro, PhD of the Department of History served as the sole Editor of the Second Edition of the book Old Manila by 1997 National Artist for Historical Literature Carlos Quirino.

The book, launched on November 3, 2016 by the Vibal Group, contains a chapter on the Dominicans and the University of Santo Tomas, entitled “Lumina Pandit, or Spreading the Light of Learning.” In an article posted in the Vibal website, the book, building on the first edition published in 1971 during the observation of Manila’s fourth centenary, contains the original text with enriched visuals—maps, postcards, engravings, sketches, and photographs—making it a comprehensive pictorial and historical record of Manila and its denizens through the centuries. It also incorporates essays providing different lenses and perspectives for readers to easily imagine and appreciate Manila in the past.
