CTRSE held an online conference on Doing Theology and Religious Education in the Philippines

The Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics (CTRSE) recently partnered with the Religious Educators Association of the Philippines (REAP) to hold a one-day Conference last February 7, 2023, which had the theme Mabathalang Pag-Aaral: Doing Filipino Theology and Religious Education in honor of Dr. Jose ‘Ka Joe’ de Mesa.” Dr. de Mesa was a lay theologian who substantially contributed to the discussion of Filipino theology. The conference was dedicated to a day-long conversation on theology and religious education in the Philippines.

The Keynote address was delivered by His Excellency Most Rev. Teodoro Bacani, DD, who spoke about the mutuality of culture and theology in the Philippine setting. Three more plenary papers were read in the morning session: Prof. Rito Baring talked about “Philippine Religious Education Research: Dilemma and Shifts in Student Religious Worldviews;” Prof. Rebecca Cacho lectured on “Paglingon sa Pinagdaanan: Mabathalang Aral Mula sa Gurong Ama;” and Mr. Leo-Martin Angelo Ocampo delivered a paper on “Pagsasalin Tungo sa Teyolohiyang Taos-Puso at Tagos-Puso.” The afternoon was dedicated to the reading of a total of 22 papers divided into two parallel presentations with three panels in each session.

The Conference is also CTRSE’s 8th Leonardo Legapi Lecture Series and its contribution to the celebration of the Research Fortnight 2023 of the University of Santo Tomas. This Conference is also the Center’s activity for its research agendum on dialogue with cultures and religions in Asia under its Center for Dialogue with Cultures and Religions in Asia or CDCRA.
