Thomasian Biologists were recognized at 26th Philippine Biodiversity Symposium at the 26th Philippine Biodiversity Symposium last July 18-22, 2017 at Ateneo de Manila University. BS Biology alumna Alexis Belen was adjudged 2nd place in the Best Undergraduate Oral Presentation and the incoming senior Mika Yungca landed on the 3rd place in the Best Undergraduate Poster Presentation, while alumnus Neil Lee received a Special Citation.
With the theme “New and Emerging Trends in Biodiversity Research and Conservation,” the symposium is open to all biodiversity researchers, conservation managers, and advocates of Philippine biodiversity. The symposium will feature contributed oral and poster presentations, workshops, exhibits and other side events on the following thematic areas: Taxonomy and Systematics (molecular and evolutionary biology studies) Biogeography and Distribution (biogeography and distribution studies, mapping, distribution modelling) Wildlife Biology and Ecology (behavior, population studies, ecosystems) Flora and Fauna (species assessments, inventories) Biodiversity and Conservation Threats and Issues (climate change, invasive species, illegal wildlife trade, etc.) Biodiversity Conservation, Management and Governance (PA management, education, capacity building, etc.).
Symposium activities included an Institutional Fair where organizations involved in biodiversity research and conservation can showcase their respective work, keynote presentations from invited experts, concurrent workshops, contributed oral and poster presentations including special sessions for high school and undergraduate students, and optional field trip to some unique ecosystems near the campus.
