Bishop Emeritus Camilo Gregorio: A Member of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Dominic

Bishop Emeritus Camilo Gregorio, O.P., D.D. of the Prelature of Batanes passed away last May 21, 2018 at the age of 78. He served for almost 14 years as the fourth prelate of Batanes until May 2017.

Bishop Gregorio was born in Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija on September 25, 1939. He finished his Bachelor’s degree in Theology and Philosophy, and Licentiate in Philosophy at the University of Santo Tomas. While in UST, he joined the Dominican Third Order, which is now the Priestly Fraternities of St. Dominic. With Bishop Gregorio’s passing, there now remains 12 bishop-members of the Fraternity, among them former Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines President Socrates B. Villegas, D.D.

Bishop Gregorio has a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas (Angelicum) in Rome and a master’s degree in educational administration at Fordham University in New York.

Gregorio was ordained priest for the Diocese of San Jose in Nueva Ecija in 1963 and was ordained to the Sacred Order of Presbyters in 1963. He also became assistant secretary in the Apostolic Nunciature, the papal embassy in Manila, in 1984. In 1987, he was installed as Auxiliary Bishop of Cebu. In 1989, he was appointed Bishop of Bacolod, a post he served until 2000.

Bishop Gregorio celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination at the Santisimo Rosario Parish in 2013. It was Bishop Gregorio’s wish to have part of his wake in the Santo Domingo Church, keeping the Dominican family very close to his heart. His remains will be in Santo Domingo Church until May 25, then it will be flown to Batanes.

He was also the third bishop to the die this year, after Bishop Jose Oliveros of Malolos who succumbed to prostate cancer on May 11, 2018; and Bishop Jesus Varela of Sorsogon, who died last February 28, 2018 .
