Bernardo of English presents paper on Philippine English pedagogy in Hawaii

Asst. Prof. Alejandro S. Bernardo, PhD of the Department of English and the Graduate School presented his paper titled World Englishes and Philippine English in the ESL Classrooms: From a Pedagogic Perspective at the 2017 Spring TESOL Conference held in the University of Hawaii, Hilo, last February 18, 2017.

Anchored on the theme “Multilingualism and ESL,’ the conference lends itself to discussions of identity, how people can balance living within and being of multiple cultures, and how they encourage the respect and value of both multilingualism and multiculturalism.

Bernardo’s paper tackled Philippine English (PhE) manifestations and structures in curricular elements and evaluates whether pedagogical practices in the English as Second Language (ESL) classrooms in the Philippines are adherent to the World Englishes (WE) paradigm. Incidentally, the same paper is to be published in the 2017 special issue of the Philippine ESL Journal (PESL). Edited by Prof. Arianne M. Borlongan, Ph.D. of the University of Tokyo, the 2017 issue of PESL is dedicated to Philippine English.

Drs. William “Pila” H. Wilson and Kauanoe Kamanā served as the plenary session speakers. This husband-and-wife tandem has been at the forefront of the Hawaiian language revitalization movement since moving to Hilo in the late 1970s.

The conference was attended by participants from various parts of Asia and the United States. Parallel paper presentations that showcased the research output of graduate students and language practitioners were also held in the morning and afternoon sessions.
