Ms. Veronica Yu, academic staff from the College of Rehabilitation Sciences Department of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), presented a research paper during the 14th International Cleft Congress 2022 at Edinburgh, Scotland held from July 11 to 15, 2022.

Titled “A Needs Assessment: Perceptions and Experiences of Parents or Caregivers of Children with Repaired Cleft Palate with or without Cleft Lip in the Philippines”, she and her co-authors, Juan Marlo Cabili, Leila Erika Choa, Mikhaila Laano, Joanne Ortiz and Andriana Perez, from the UST SLP Class of 2022, delved into the experiences of guardians in order to enhance service delivery and propose an initial draft of a Parent Training Program (PTP) designed to improve the speech of the target population’s children. The paper also recommended other opportunities to address the unmet needs of the cleft community.

In the same event, Yu also spoke at a workshop discussion with Dr. Catherine Crowley (USA), Dr. Chelsea Sommer (USA), and Dr. Edouardo Adjassin (Benin), where she presented the Smile Train mobile application, for which she creates content. The application is produced by Smile Train, the world’s largest cleft-focused organization, which also sponsored the transportation to and accommodation for her presentation in Scotland
