History

History

Medical Technology in the University of Santo Tomas was introduced as an elective course to 4th- and 5th-year B.S. Pharmacy Students by Rev. Fr. Lorenzo Rodriguez O.P., who was then the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy.

In 1958, Rev. Fr. Lorenzo Rodriguez, O.P. visited the Board of Registry for Medical Technology in Muncie, Indiana, where he was encouraged by the Board of Registry to start the course, Medical Technology. After a series of meetings with the then Bureau of Private Education, a temporary permit for the first three years of Medical Technology was issued on June 17, 1959. Later, the temporary permit for the Fourth Year (Internship) was given in June, 1960.

It was on June 14, 1961, that Medical Technology was approved and recognized as a degree-level program.

More than fifty years after its recognition as a degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology has trained students to become globally competitive and competent in various areas of laboratory science. It now takes pride as one of the country’s leading institutions for Medical Technology, being a Center of Excellence recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), receiving the Level IV re-accredited status from the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA), and having its graduates qualified to take the international certification given by American Medical Technologists (AMT) and by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ACSP).
