TONGOL, Bernard John V.

TONGOL, Bernard John V.

Prof. Bernard John V. Tongol, Ph.D., was a recipient of the National Academy of Science and Technology Outstanding Young Scientists award in 2012 for his contributions in the field of electrochemical surface science, specifically on the electrochemical scanning tunnelling microscopy studies of electroactive polymers and oligomers of thiophenes on gold single crystal electrodes. He was also a recipient of research grants from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) for the development of electrocatalysts for direct ethanol fuel cell, an alternative source of energy. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering degree, major in Applied Chemistry from Tohoku University, Japan in 2007 with a scholarship from the Japan government (Monbukagakusho). He obtained his B.S. Chemistry (cum laude) and M.S. Chemistry (magna cum laude) degrees from the University of Santo Tomas. Presently, he serves as the Director of the UST Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences.
