Peralta of ITSO talks about IP in academe at Dumaguete Innovation Expo

Executive Assistant for Intellectual Property & Research and UST ITSO Manager Assoc. Prof. Michael Jorge N. Peralta, was invited by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Negros Oriental Provincial Science and Technology Center to its first Dumaguete University Town Innovation Expo on November 28 and 29, 2016 at the Robinson’s Place Dumaguete, Calindangan, Dumaguete City. The expo showcased research outputs of the different Universities in Negros Oriental, which likewise included an Innovation Seminar/Forum, where he was part of the resource speakers who discussed Intellectual Property (IP), Innovation, and the Academe.

In his discussion, Peralta emphasized the role of universities in knowledge generation and IP protection, which when transferred to industry, will be able to uplift the economy of the country. Parallel to the expo at Robinsons was an IP Policy Seminar-Workshop for University officials at the Silliman University College of Law, where he talked about the Overview of the Different IP Rights by citing real examples to illustrate the practical application of the IP Code. Peralta then went on to guide them on drafting their IP Policy that would hopefully lay down the rules and regulations that will govern technologies generated by their students and faculty. It is the goal of the ITSO to increase IP awareness not only among the institutions of which they are members but also of other institutions to encourage and empower them to take advantage of the technologies that they generate and transfer them to industry for the public good.
