Description

Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy is a four-year program that produces client-centered health professionals who are concerned with promoting health and well-being, with the primary goal of engaging individuals and population in occupation to facilitate participation in culturally meaningful activities and tasks, and address physical, developmental, social, or emotional problems.  The program culminates in a one-year internship program that allows students to work hand in hand with clients of all ages, to increase the latter’s independence, enhance development, and/or prevent disability through their involvement in activities that are therapeutically designed to promote occupational performance. They also work with different communities and organizations to enable a just and inclusive society for all, in order to facilitate the realization of one’s potential in leading an independent, productive, and satisfying life.

  1. Synthesize and utilize knowledge of health, social, psychosocial, physical, natural, environmental, and occupational sciences in the practice of occupational therapy 
  2. Utilize occupational therapy foundations and concepts in assessment/evaluation and intervention in various occupational practice settings and across lifespan, within a broad continuum of care 

  3. Work collaboratively and effectively with clients and/or in a team in inter-professional practice settings 

  4. Demonstrate proficiency in oral and written communication skills, for inter-professional education and for educating an individual client or population

  5. Promote community health and well-being in the practice of the profession and community mobilization as Thomasian agents of change

  6. Demonstrate beginning research-related skills to perform various roles and to facilitate the use of best OT practices for quality outcomes

  • Occupational therapy consultant or clinician in diverse facility-based and community-based practice settings, such as hospitals, clinics, day and rehabilitation centers, community mental health centers, skilled nursing facilities, home health care, school systems, and special education programs, industry and private enterprises

Student Experience and Support

Student Experience and Support

The Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy program provides not just theoretical input, but also practical applications of learned concepts and skills to best prepare students for the world of work. To do so, the program uses facilities such as laboratories for their learning experiences.

The University of Santo Tomas provides student services that cater to academic, spiritual, and wellness concerns of students. These support units are found in the different parts of the campus and can be accessed by Thomasians. When the University shifted to distance learning, the services also transitioned to online services to continue addressing the needs of Thomasians.

Policies

Policies

  • The passing grade for all courses, following the official conversion table is 75%.
  • Grades in all courses are computed on Base 65
    • e.g., for a 100-item exam, the passing score is 65/100.
  • Grades in all skills laboratory courses are computed on Base 75.

FINAL GRADE

Equal to the average of 3 SHIFTING GRADES

  • If ≥ 74.50% = PASS
  • If ≤74.49% = FAILURE

For all courses with Lecture and Laboratory:

There will be two separate grades for

  • Lecture
  • Laboratory

Failure in either will not affect passing grade in the other.

A student with a failing grade with lecture and laboratory components will not be allowed to enroll in any course that has the failed component as prerequisite.

In order to be promoted to the second year of the program, the student must meet the program’s minimum general weighted average (GWA) as computed by the Office of the Registrar by the end of the Second Term of the First Year, as follows:

  • Physical Therapy – 2.750
  • Occupational Therapy – 2.750
  • Speech-Language Pathology – 2.750
  • Sports Science – 2.750

Failure to meet the required minimum GWA will mean the student will be taken out of the program in the College and tagged as NTBR (Not to be Readmitted).

  • Also known as NTBR (Not To Be Readmitted)
  • Accumulated failures > 9 units
  • Failures > 1/2 their load for IRREGULAR Students
  • Failure in the same subject twice
  • 1st-year students who in the 1st term incur failures of >9 units may be allowed to enroll ON PROBATION in the 2nd term in courses authorized by the Dean. However, they will not be readmitted to the next academic year.
  • No student shall be allowed to take any third-year course with deficiencies in any second-year course, including PE and NSTP.
  • No student in the College shall be allowed to shift to another program within the College at any period of his/her stay in the College.
  • Professional courses are only offered once a year.
  • Failure in any professional course will cause a delay of at least a year in the student’s program study.

UST shaped me to become an OT who can skillfully adapt and assume different roles in various situations. I've become a supervisor, therapist to kids with special needs, a Chief OT in 2 centers, and now, during this Covid pandemic, the only traveling and hospital OT to adults with physical dysfunction covering five towns here in Batangas. Those will not be possible if not for UST's intensive teaching and training through a masterfully planned internship program, lectures, laboratory classes, and professors' rich feedback and guidance, to solve real-life problems and foster theoretical, technical, and practical skills. Ultimately, UST afforded me experiences and opportunities to become a mabuting OT who seeks professional growth, communicates effectively to clients from all walks of life, and responds to clients' diverse needs to the best of my abilities.

If you were to ask me to describe my journey in occupational therapy in UST using a simple phrase, it would be “Tough Love”. UST molded us to face all challenges headstrong and to work with quality and wit. Tough love reflects the beauty that emerged from the training I had to become the occupational therapist I am today.

The education I received not only molded my “hard skills” but also the “soft skills”. The different learning activities provided actually pushed me to do more and be more to successfully accomplish them. It would feel as though it was endlessly tiring but come my internship until the present day of working, the feeling was replaced to be endlessly rewarding. I realized that the training made the outside world easy to handle because it prepared me to work with grounded soft skills and passion combined with the outstanding hard skills required.

The professors in UST all had exceptional backgrounds while the alumni continuously made names for themselves. Looking ahead, these were inspirations that UST unknowingly provided for me. Now that I am working, the OT I am today does not just end with handling patients. I constantly strive to be more and to serve more just how I was inspired by my UST colleagues and that means to extend extra help with center management, to mentor students, to volunteer, share information and accept invitations of upholding the profession in various ways, to lead by example and to work diligently even in the simplest of tasks.

In occupational therapy, the concept of the “just-right challenge” is often emphasized. What makes UST’s OT program top-tier is that it applies this concept in educating and training their students. Our instructors presented us with challenges which bolstered our knowledge and skills, and, at the same time, nurtured us into the competent and compassionate “mabuting OTs” we are today by serving as our role models.

UST has definitely equipped me well with the essential knowledge and skills significant to the field of occupational therapy and beyond. They combine theories and concepts with actual applications and case studies which helped me understand and appreciate my profession more. This in turn prepared me in dealing with actual patients, allowing me to see them holistically. UST trained me not only to be proficient academically but also helped build my character, strive harder in times of adversities, and always see the good in others. They emphasized that we should not view our patients for their disabilities but as individuals endowed with fortifying potential, and I think that is what makes us all “mabuting OTs.”
