The University of Santo Tomas paid tribute to the Very Rev. Fr. Rolando V. de la Rosa, O.P., PhD, SThD, incoming Rector Magnificus of the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas (the Angelicum) in Rome, in a testimonial luncheon last July 21, 2016 (Thursday), at the Buenaventura G. Paredes, O.P. Building.

Fr. de la Rosa’s confreres, represented by Rev. Fr. Filemon I. dela Cruz, Jr., O.P., Vicar Provincial of the Dominican Province of the Philippines and UST’s Vice-Rector for Religious Affairs, paid tribute to his formator for being a model for aspiring priests.

Longtime UST professor and pioneer of the Center for Campus Ministry Prof. Lourdes Syquia-Bautista paid tribute by saying Fr. de la Rosa was a man who spoke the universal language—the language of love—so fluently that wherever he goes, he will not have a problem in communicating with others.

Well-wishers from the University of Santo Tomas and the UST Hospital likewise shared their thoughts via pre-recorded messages.

In his response, Fr. de la Rosa requested for prayers from the community as he embarks on a new journey in an unfamiliar community. He conceded that he is not familiar with Angelicum, explaining why the appointment came as a surprise. He recounted how the news was broken to him by no less than the Master of the Order, Rev. Fr. Bruno F. Cadore, O.P., himself.

Fr. de la Rosa will leave for Rome next week and begin his crash course on Italian, before being installed as Rector in September, coinciding with the start of classes.
