HIDDEN TREASURES: An Exhibit of Spanish-era churches in the Philippines

The University of Santo Tomas and the Ortigas Library Foundation will open a travelling exhibit entitled, “Hidden Treasures: An exhibit of Spanish-era churches in the Philippines,” this January 12, 2010 at the UST Museum.

This exhibit, which made possible through the coordination of the UST Museum and the UST Department of History, features photographs of major Spanish-era churches in the Philippines by Betty Lallana and Boy Arboleda. These include churches established by Dominican missionaries such as the Church of St. Dominic de Guzman in Lallo, Cagayan which was built in 1788, the Church of Santa Filomena in Alcala, Cagayan and the Church of St. Matthias in Tumauini Isabela.

These churches underscore the important role of the Dominicans and other missionaries in the Philippine history. The churches, convents and fortresses they built are a testament to these missionaries and native builders. These unfortunately have been largely forgotten and are in danger of being lost to neglect and modern development.

By photography and holding exhibits the Ortigas Foundation and the University of Santo Tomas hope to popularize these religious structures as the treasures of the Philippines and foster interest in the value of preserving and popularizing these legacies of the past for the future generations.

The exhibit will last from January 12, 2010 to 22, 2010 and the public is cordially invited to come.

Viewing Hours:  Tuesdays to Saturdays 8:30 am - 4:00 pm

Closed on Sunday and university holidays.
