Faculty of Pharmacy

The oldest in the Philippines, the Faculty of Pharmacy offers courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, and Bachelor of Science in Botany.

About the Department

The Faculty of Pharmacy affirms its responsibility to develop individuals proficient in the Art and Science of Pharmacy: advancement in technology; improvement in the delivery of health care services and the formation of a progressive and healthy society.

It endeavors to be an institution that serves as a medium to nurture students highly qualified in the various pharmaceutical specialization, sustain a component teaching force meritorious in the professionalism and conscious of its role in the pursuit of the national prosperity and global acceptability.

The goals of the Faculty are as follows:

  • Promotion of a dialogue between the faith and reason leading to the integration of knowledge about man, nature and God.
  • Integral formation of the human person and the protection and advancement of human dignity.
  • Development of sound professional expertise in an atmosphere of academic freedom. Preservation, enrichment and propagation of Filipino cultural heritage rooted upon a sense of history and tradition.
  • Recognition of the vital role of the individual not only as citizen of his country working for national development but also as citizen of the world promoting universal good, and as denizen of planet Earth, preserving and saving her for all humankind.
  • Cultivation of Christian values necessary for the formation of a social conscience.

History

The oldest in the Philippines, the Faculty of Pharmacy was founded in May 1871 by virtue of the Modification of the Moret decree. During the Spanish regime, the course was one of six years. In 1901; when the American administration took over, the curriculum was reduced to four years. Then in 1916 it was further reduced to three years until 1930 when the four-year curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy was re-adapted. Finally in 1954, Pharmacy was made five years. In 1984, te degree of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy was reduced to four years again with the integration of some subjects.

The Faculty of Pharamcy continued to grow with the addition of courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in 1962. In both cases, University of Santo Tomas has gained the distinction of inrtoducing these courses for the first time in the Philippines. The Faculty of Pharmacy has the distinction of being the First College in the University of Santo Tomas to admit lady students in 1924.

In 1986, the degree of Bachelor in Science in Botany was offered in the Faculty of Pharmacy.
