Dr. Fortunato B. Sevilla III, immediate past dean of the College of Science of the University of Santo Tomas, received the Innovation Award during the 2nd Gawad Lider in Science Education on 19 July 2010. The biennial recognition program is under the Science Education Institute (SEI) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Dr. Sevilla is the recipient of the Innovation Award for the introduction of a technology-based innovation that benefits education in the sciences and for inspiring others to become exemplary leaders and/or innovators to improve science education in sciences. Dr. Sevilla’s innovation involves Low-Cost Instrumentation for Chemical Education. It consists of three (3) designs of chemical instrumentation systems which are fabricated using simple, inexpensive and easily available materials. Initiated in 1993, the innovation was adapted in 2005 to make it suitable for microscale chemistry, wherein small amounts of reagents are required. It addresses the need to incorporate the use of instrumentation in the general chemistry laboratory course to make the course relevant and up-to-date.
