Last January 11, UST Lady Fencers Team Captain Maylene Pailma bagged the gold medal in the Brunei Open Fencing Championship at the Indoor Stadium in Bandar Seri Begawan. Pailma scored 15-8 against national team member Alleine Cortey of the University of the East. Fellow Lady Fencers Cherie Mañago and Precious Sapungan bagged the bronze medal in the women’s sabre division, whereas their counterpart Tiger Fencer Matthew Domantay also brought home the bronze.
However, Pailma and teammate Eileen de Guzman will not play in the next UAAP season. De Guzman is recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Despite her future absence in the team, Pailma said she would engage in tournaments outside of collegiate leagues to represent UST and the country. Pailma is a legal management student from the Faculty of Arts and Letters. (First reported in the Varstarian)
